[ His hands are flat against Jerry's chest, and he fights like a demon until the teeth sink in.

It's not better instincts - though, God knows it's a good idea not to let the teeth tear him further. It's the sudden shock of pain - and what comes immediately after.

He breathes in, sudden and shaky, because the adrenaline's hit him at unimaginable speeds, and suddenly everything around him is the boldest it's ever been. Bright sharp pain, and he sees details, metal joints and the shadows on the stairs, the fog that's held him since his death sliced through and peeled away. His heartbeat threads.

He feels alive.

And when he realizes that, he stops trying to push Jerry away. Whether he survives now or not isn't up to him. ]
